American Donuts in Italy
My mom and sisters and I are running a long race in Italy and the local bakery is giving away free Starbucks coffee and Dunkin’ Donuts for the runners. We are very excited about this. The donut options are crullers, French horns, apple fritters, or chocolate and vanilla glazed. When my mom and I get to the counter and order it gets a little confusing because of the language barrier. The person behind the pastry case asks what we want inside our donut and we are confused and ask what they mean. They say that you can get tomato or hummus or a hot dog as a filing. It seems like the Italians don’t totally understand American donuts. A part of me wonders if the tomato would make it taste amazing? We say we just want the donut as is, nothing extra inside. My mom gets the last French horn filled with chocolate cream and I get the last cruller. They are both huge, like the size of dinner plates. My mom pays. The pastries look amazing and we are excited to eat them.
